THE MECHANICAL PRINCIPLE

Over-center force creates the snap.

Inside Latch, a spring-loaded mechanism stores force as the toggle moves toward its midpoint. Once the lever passes the center point, the geometry of the mechanism changes and the spring helps drive the lever toward the opposite stable position.

What exactly is Latch?

Latch is a compact mechanical play object with a metal toggle lever and two stable positions. Push the lever through its midpoint and the internal mechanism snaps it into the opposite position.

Is it an electronic switch?

No. Latch is designed as a purely mechanical tactile play object. It does not control lights, electronics or other devices.

Why does the lever snap into place?

An internal spring-loaded over-center mechanism stores force near the midpoint. Once the lever crosses center, the mechanism helps move it toward the opposite stable position.

Can the lever move both directions?

Yes. Latch is designed to switch back and forth between two mechanical positions.

Does Latch require batteries?

No. Latch is completely mechanical and requires no battery, charging cable, motor or app.

How is Latch different from Index?
