Balance is about more than weight.

Each counterweight creates a turning force around the central pivot. That force depends on both the amount of weight and its distance from the center. Move the weight farther away and its effect increases.

What exactly is Balance?

Balance is a kinetic desk sculpture with two movable counterweights attached to a beam rotating around a central pivot. Moving the weights changes how the beam responds.

How do I play with it?

Slide either counterweight, watch the beam tilt, then adjust one or both sides until you find equilibrium again.

Why does moving the weight change the balance?

A weight creates torque around the pivot. The farther that weight sits from the center, the greater its turning effect on the beam.

Is there one correct solution?

No. Many combinations can create interesting positions and balanced states depending on how the weights are arranged.

Does it require batteries?

No. Balance operates entirely through physical weight, gravity, position and the central pivot.
